Does your pool cue have a leather tip shim?

More an more cue manufacturers are now incorporating leather tip shims into their production process. A small accessory attached to the billiard cue. Stepping into the Obright Billiard Cue Factory and speaking with the master cue maker, We learned that these shims come in materials such as fiber and resin , and these seemingly inconspicuous little accessory actually serves several important purposes:

1.Protecting the ferrule: The coarser the wood inside the ferrule, the more freely energy is transmitted; however, a thinner inner wall makes the ferrule more prone to cracking. (This is especially noticeable in low-density ferrules from brands like Mezz 、Predator、Meucci、Tiger.)

2.Even force distribution: Some ferrules use a sleeved structure, and adding a tip shim helps ensure the top surface receives pressure more evenly.

3.Extending ferrule lifespan: Each time the leather tip is replaced, a small amount of the ferrule must be trimmed. Over time, this can shorten the ferrule significantly. Using a shim reduces the need for direct cutting, thus prolonging the life of the ferrule.

4.Fine-tuning hardness: If the billiard tip itself feels too soft, adding a harder shim can slightly increase the overall stiffness and responsiveness.
