A pool cue is a consumable item, yet it is quite delicate—especially the solid wood shaft. As long as you maintain daily cleaning, prevent impacts, and perform regular maintenance, there is no reason it shouldn’t last a decade.
I. Daily Cleaning
After playing, your cue will be covered in sweat and dust. Always wipe it down with a slightly damp, soft cloth along the grain, then immediately dry it with a clean cloth. If there are oil stains or grease, use a specialized cleaner or soapy water to remove them thoroughly before drying. Keeping the cue clean and dry is essential.
II. Tip and Grip Maintenance
Regularly trim the height and shape of the tip, and apply chalk before playing. Use grip sandpaper to gently abrade the surface of the wrap periodically to remove dirt trapped in the leather texture and restore traction. Replace the wrap promptly if it becomes stiff or damaged.
III. Shaft Protection
When not in use, always store your cue in a case to shield the shaft from external elements. Avoid placing it in damp or high-temperature environments, as this can lead to warping or damage.
IV. Regular Servicing
Beyond daily cleaning and protection, periodic comprehensive inspections are necessary. Every few months, check the overall condition of the cue, including the straightness of the shaft, the wear on the grip, and the flatness of the ferrule. Address any issues promptly to keep the cue in optimal condition.
